Karma · Lesson 5

The Trap of Inaction

न हि कश्चित्क्षणमपि जातु तिष्ठत्यकर्मकृत्

No one can remain without action even for a moment. Everyone is driven to action by the qualities born of nature.

Chapter 3, Verse 5

“I’ll just do nothing for a while.” We’ve all said it. Take a break. Step back. Wait it out.

Krishna says: that’s an illusion. You’re always acting. Even lying on the couch scrolling your phone is action — you’re choosing to consume instead of create, to numb instead of feel.

The question was never whether to act. It’s how to act. Consciously or unconsciously. With intention or on autopilot.

Your nature drives you forward whether you like it or not. Hunger makes you eat. Curiosity makes you click. Restlessness makes you pace. You’re a creature of action — pretending otherwise just means your actions become unconscious, reactive, and usually regrettable.

The person who says “I’m taking a break from making decisions” is making a decision. The person who says “I’m not going to think about it” is thinking about not thinking about it.

Krishna’s point: stop pretending you can opt out. You can’t. So opt in — consciously, deliberately.

Reflect

Where in your life are you “doing nothing” that’s actually an unconscious action — scrolling, avoiding, procrastinating?

Quick Check

According to Krishna, is it possible to truly 'do nothing'?
