Karma · Lesson 6
Selfless Action
यज्ञार्थात्कर्मणोऽन्यत्र लोकोऽयं कर्मबन्धनः
Work done as a sacrifice for the greater good does not bind. All other work binds you to this world.
There’s a difference between working for something and working at something.
Working for a promotion, for validation, for the Instagram post — that’s action with strings attached. Every outcome becomes personal. If it works, you’re validated. If it doesn’t, you’re crushed.
Working at your craft because it matters, because it helps someone, because it’s the right thing to do — that’s what Krishna calls “sacrifice.” Not the dramatic, self-denying kind. Just: this isn’t about me.
The best open-source developers know this. They build tools used by millions, and most do it without expecting anything in return. The work is the point.
The parent who wakes up at 3am for a crying baby isn’t thinking about ROI. The teacher who stays after hours isn’t optimizing for performance reviews. Something in the action itself feels right — that’s selfless action.
Krishna isn’t saying ambition is bad. He’s saying: when the reason you act is bigger than you, the action can’t hurt you.
Reflect
Think about the work you do. How much of it is for you, and how much of it is for something bigger? Is there a way to shift the balance?
