Karma · Lesson 4

The Yoga of Action

योगस्थः कुरु कर्माणि सङ्गं त्यक्त्वा धनञ्जय

Perform your actions, O Arjuna, being steadfast in yoga, abandoning attachment, and remaining even-minded in success and failure.

Chapter 2, Verse 48

“Remaining even-minded in success and failure.” Easy to read. Brutally hard to live.

You get the job offer — you’re elated. You get rejected — you’re crushed. Krishna says: notice both, but let neither own you.

This isn’t about being emotionless. It’s about not letting your identity ride the rollercoaster. You can feel disappointed without believing you are a disappointment. You can feel proud without believing you are your achievement.

Think of the best leader you’ve known. They probably didn’t panic when things went wrong, and didn’t get arrogant when things went right. That steadiness isn’t natural talent — it’s practice.

Krishna calls this “yoga” — not the stretching kind. The original meaning: union. Bringing your scattered mind into one focused point, regardless of what’s happening around you.

Reflect

Think of a recent success and a recent failure. Did you let either one define how you saw yourself?
