Vairagya · Lesson 9
Who You Are Without the Labels
निर्मानमोहा जितसङ्गदोषाः
Those who are free from false prestige, illusion, and false association, who understand the eternal, who are done with material lust, who are free from the dualities of happiness and distress — they reach that eternal kingdom.
“I’m a founder.” “I’m a mother.” “I’m a creative.” “I’m the smart one.” We build entire identities around labels and then spend our lives defending them.
Krishna calls this mana — false prestige — and moha — illusion. The attachment to who you think you are. Not your stuff. Not your relationships. Your identity.
This is the deepest layer of attachment because it feels like survival. Questioning your career feels like questioning your worth. Losing a title feels like losing yourself. A creative block doesn’t just feel frustrating — it feels existential, because you are the creative one.
But you’re not. You’re the awareness underneath all those labels. The founder is a role. The parent is a role. The creative is a role. They’re costumes you wear, not the actor wearing them.
When you detach from identity, something remarkable happens: you become free to change. You can pivot careers without a crisis. You can evolve without betraying “who you are.” You can fail at something without collapsing, because the failure happened to a role, not to you.
The person who has moved beyond mana and moha doesn’t need to be seen a certain way. They’re free to be whoever the moment requires.
