Vairagya · Lesson 8

Friendly and Free

अद्वेष्टा सर्वभूतानां मैत्रः करुण एव च

One who is not envious but is a kind friend to all living entities, who does not think himself a proprietor, who is free from false ego — such a devotee is very dear to Me.

Chapter 12, Verse 13

There’s a popular misconception that detached people are cold. Aloof. Checked out. That letting go means not caring.

Krishna describes the detached person as maitrah — friendly. Karuna — compassionate. Not envious of anyone. Not possessive of anything. Free from the false ego that divides the world into “mine” and “not mine.”

This makes perfect sense when you think about it. The person who’s gripping their possessions, their status, their relationships — they don’t have bandwidth for genuine kindness. They’re too busy defending what’s “theirs.” The person who holds everything lightly has their hands free to help.

Think about the most generous person you know. Odds are, they’re not attached to what they have. They give freely because they’re not keeping score. They’re kind to strangers because they don’t see strangers — they see people.

Now think about the most possessive person you know. The one who counts favors, guards their territory, gets jealous easily. That’s what attachment looks like from the outside. It masquerades as love but functions as control.

Detachment doesn’t make you less loving. It makes you more loving — because your love isn’t contaminated by need.

Reflect

Is there a relationship where your attachment is showing up as possessiveness rather than genuine care?

Quick Check

What does Krishna say is the relationship between detachment and kindness?
