Karma · Lesson 9
The Doer Illusion
प्रकृतेः क्रियमाणानि गुणैः कर्माणि सर्वशः
All actions are performed by the qualities of nature. One whose mind is deluded by ego thinks, 'I am the doer.'
“I built this company.” “I raised these kids.” “I made this happen.”
We love the narrative of individual achievement. And some of it is earned. But Krishna asks you to look more carefully. How much of what you “did” was actually you?
Your talent came from genetics you didn’t choose. Your opportunities came from circumstances you didn’t create. Your energy came from food you didn’t grow, sleep your body demanded, and a brain that wired itself before you were conscious.
This isn’t about discounting your effort. It’s about releasing the crushing weight of thinking everything depends on you. The project doesn’t succeed or fail because of you alone. The relationship doesn’t work or break because of you alone. You’re one instrument in an orchestra.
When you let go of the “I am the doer” illusion, two things happen. You stop taking all the credit — which makes you more generous. And you stop taking all the blame — which makes you more resilient.
Reflect
Think of something you’re proud of. How many other people, forces, and circumstances had to align for it to happen?
