Karma · Lesson 8

Let Go of the Scoreboard

सुखदुःखे समे कृत्वा लाभालाभौ जयाजयौ

Treating alike pleasure and pain, gain and loss, victory and defeat — then engage in battle. You shall incur no sin.

Chapter 2, Verse 38

We keep score constantly. Followers. Salary. Likes. Rankings. Steps. Streaks. The entire modern world is a scoreboard.

And every time you check the score, you hand your peace of mind to a number.

Krishna doesn’t say stop playing. He says stop staring at the scoreboard. Play your best game. Give everything you have. But when the whistle blows, walk off the field the same person regardless of the score.

This is unbelievably hard in a world designed to make you check metrics. But think about the times you were happiest while working — were you checking stats? Probably not. You were lost in the work itself. That flow state? That’s what Krishna is pointing at.

The irony is: when you stop watching the scoreboard, you usually score higher. Anxiety is a terrible performance enhancer.

Reflect

What scoreboard are you checking too often? What would change if you covered it up for a week?
