Bhaya · Lesson 5

Elevate Yourself Through Your Own Mind

उद्धरेदात्मनात्मानं नात्मानमवसादयेत्। आत्मैव ह्यात्मनो बन्धुरात्मैव रिपुरात्मनः।।

Elevate yourself through your own mind, and do not degrade yourself. The mind alone is the friend of the self, and the mind alone is the enemy of the self.

Chapter 6, Verse 5

Your mind can talk you into anything. It can also talk you out of everything.

The same brain that solves complex problems at work is the one that whispers “you’re not good enough” at 2 AM. The same imagination that dreams up your best ideas is the one that constructs elaborate disaster scenarios about things that haven’t happened yet.

Krishna nails it: your mind is either your best friend or your worst enemy. There’s no neutral setting.

Think about starting something new — a new job, a new city, a creative project. One voice says “you’ve got this, you’ve done hard things before.” Another voice says “who are you kidding?” Both voices are you. The question is which one you feed.

The fear of failure is almost never about the actual failure. It’s about the story your mind builds around it. “If I fail this exam, I’m stupid.” “If this startup doesn’t work, I wasted my twenties.” “If they reject me, I’m unlovable.” None of that is the failure itself. It’s the mind adding a narrative.

Krishna’s instruction is radical in its simplicity: lift yourself up. Don’t wait for someone else to fix your self-doubt. Don’t wait for external validation to feel worthy. The work is internal.

Every time you catch your mind spiralling and gently redirect it — that’s the practice. You’re not fighting your mind. You’re training it to be your ally instead of your saboteur.

Reflect

Is your mind acting as your friend or your enemy today? What’s one thing you can do to shift it?
