Atman · Lesson 7
Your Own Best Friend
बन्धुरात्मात्मनस्तस्य येनात्मैवात्मना जितः। अनात्मनस्तु शत्रुत्वे वर्तेतात्मैव शत्रुवत्।।
For the one who has conquered the self, the self is the best of friends. But for the one who has not, the self acts as the worst enemy.
You know your own patterns better than anyone. The procrastination. The self-sabotage. The voice that says “you’re not good enough” right before something important. No external enemy has as much access to your vulnerabilities as you do.
Krishna captures this perfectly: the self is either your greatest ally or your worst adversary. There is no neutral. You are either working with yourself or against yourself, every single day.
Think about the last time you set a goal and then undermined it. You wanted to wake up early — you stayed up scrolling. You wanted to eat better — you ordered takeout. You wanted to speak up — you stayed quiet. That’s the unconquered self acting as the enemy. It’s not that you lack willpower. It’s that the part of you running on autopilot has different priorities than the part of you making plans.
Conquering the self doesn’t mean suppressing who you are. It means getting your habits, impulses, and deeper intentions aligned. When the person who wants to write actually sits down and writes, the self has become the friend. When the person who wants connection actually reaches out instead of isolating, the self has become the friend.
The beautiful paradox is that you’re both the one who needs to be conquered and the one doing the conquering. There’s no enemy to defeat out there. The entire battle — and the entire victory — is internal.
Reflect
In what area of your life is your self currently acting more like an enemy than a friend? What is one small thing you could do today to shift that?
