Vishvarupa · Lesson 8

Salutations from Every Side

नमः पुरस्तादथ पृष्ठतस्ते नमोऽस्तु ते सर्वत एव सर्व। अनन्तवीर्यामितविक्रमस्त्वं सर्वं समाप्नोषि ततोऽसि सर्वः

Salutations to You from the front, from behind, from every side. You are everything, of infinite power and infinite might — You pervade all, therefore You are all.

Chapter 11, Verse 40

Arjuna has gone through terror. Through awe. Through confusion. And now he arrives somewhere unexpected: surrender. Not defeated surrender — reverent surrender. The kind that comes when you finally see the full picture and the only honest response is to bow.

“Salutations from the front. From behind. From every side.”

This is someone who realizes there’s nowhere to stand where you’re outside the thing you’re bowing to. You can’t face it because it’s also behind you. You can’t turn away because it’s there too. It’s everywhere. So you bow in every direction.

“You are everything. Therefore, you are all.”

Here’s the logic: if infinite power and infinite might pervade everything, then nothing is excluded. The annoying coworker — that’s also it. The traffic jam — that’s also it. The devastating loss and the stupid Tuesday afternoon — both it. There’s no “non-sacred” space to retreat to.

This is the end of the cosmic vision, and it’s also the beginning of something new for Arjuna. He can never unsee this. He’ll go back to being a warrior, back to the battlefield, back to the mess of human life. But he’ll do it knowing that the mess is within something infinite. That even the ugliest moments are part of something immeasurably vast.

Being small isn’t a defeat. It’s a relief. You don’t have to hold everything together. You don’t have to understand everything. You don’t have to be the center. You can be a part — a real, connected, essential part — of something that already is everything.

Reflect

What would change in how you move through your day if you genuinely believed that the sacred isn’t somewhere special — that it pervades everything, including the mundane and the difficult?
