Shraddha · Lesson 8
The Universe Mirrors You
ये यथा मां प्रपद्यन्ते तांस्तथैव भजाम्यहम्
As people approach Me, so I reciprocate. Everyone follows My path in all respects, O Partha.
This verse describes the most elegant feedback loop in existence: life gives back what you bring to it.
Approach with suspicion, and the world seems hostile. Approach with openness, and doors appear. Approach with half-hearted effort, and you get half-hearted results. Krishna says the divine works the same way — ye yatha mam prapadyante tams tathaiva bhajamy aham. As you come to Me, so I come to you.
This isn’t magical thinking. It’s observable. Walk into a room expecting everyone to dislike you, and your body language, your tone, your closed posture will create exactly that outcome. Walk in expecting connection, and you’ll find it. The world isn’t fixed — it responds.
Psychologists call this confirmation bias, self-fulfilling prophecy, or expectancy effects. Krishna called it reciprocity with the divine. The language differs, but the truth is identical: your inner orientation shapes your outer experience. Not because the universe is reading your mind, but because your mind shapes how you read the universe.
This has a practical implication that’s easy to miss: if you want your circumstances to change, change how you approach them first. Don’t wait for the relationship to improve before you show up with love. Don’t wait for the job to get better before you bring your full effort. The reciprocation follows the approach, not the other way around.
The verse is also quietly inclusive: “everyone follows My path in all respects.” There’s no wrong way to approach. Every path, every orientation, every type of seeker is met where they are. The only variable is what you bring.
Reflect
How are you currently approaching the thing that frustrates you most? What would change if you shifted your approach first, before waiting for the situation to improve?
