Purushottama · Lesson 8

The Supreme Person

उत्तमः पुरुषस्त्वन्यः परमात्मेत्युदाहृतः

But beyond both the perishable and imperishable is the Supreme Person, called Paramatma — the Highest Self.

Chapter 15, Verse 17

Krishna draws a simple map of everything.

Layer one: the perishable. Your body, your thoughts, your job title, your relationships, your bank account, the weather, the news cycle. Everything that changes. Everything with an expiration date.

Layer two: the imperishable. The individual soul. The awareness behind your eyes that has never changed from childhood to now. The “you” that remains constant even as everything around you shifts. Timeless but individual.

Layer three: beyond both. The Supreme Person — Purushottama — who isn’t just unchanging but is the source of both the changing and the unchanging. Not separate from either, but not reducible to either.

Most people live entirely in layer one. Their identity is their job, their appearance, their social standing. When these change, they’re destroyed.

Some people discover layer two. They realize there’s a self beyond roles and circumstances. This brings real peace — but it can also bring spiritual pride. “I’ve found the real me.”

Krishna says: there’s still more. Beyond even the imperishable “real you” is something that holds it all. The ground of being itself. Not just your consciousness — but consciousness itself.

This is the chapter’s final move. You’re not just a body (perishable). You’re not just a soul (imperishable). You are held by something that transcends both categories entirely. And when you orient your life toward that — not toward preserving the body, not even toward perfecting the soul, but toward the source of everything — that’s when the inverted tree finally makes sense. That’s where the roots are.

Reflect

Where do you spend most of your energy — maintaining what’s perishable, protecting what feels permanent about you, or reaching toward something beyond both? What would it look like to shift that balance?

What are the 'two beings' that the Supreme Person transcends?
