Moksha · Lesson 6

Seeing the Undivided

सर्वभूतेषु येनैकं भावमव्ययमीक्षते। अविभक्तं विभक्तेषु तज्ज्ञानं विद्धि सात्त्विकम्॥

That knowledge by which one sees a single, imperishable reality in all beings — undivided in the divided — know that knowledge as sattvic.

Chapter 18, Verse 20

We spend most of our lives sorting. This person is smart, that one isn’t. This group is like me, that one is different. This country, that country. This team, that team. Our entire mental operating system runs on categorization, and it’s useful — until it becomes a prison.

Krishna describes sattvic knowledge as the ability to see one undivided reality running through all apparently separate things. Not as a poetic metaphor. As a perceptual shift.

Here’s a modern way in: think about the internet. Billions of devices, wildly different form factors, running different software, showing different content — but underneath, it’s all the same protocol. TCP/IP doesn’t care if you’re on a phone in Tokyo or a laptop in Lagos. The diversity is real at the surface level. The unity is real at the foundational level. Both are true simultaneously.

This is what Krishna means. He’s not asking you to pretend differences don’t exist. He’s asking you to also perceive the layer beneath the differences. When you meet someone whose politics, religion, or lifestyle is alien to yours, can you see the same fundamental consciousness looking out through their eyes?

This matters for freedom because division is a chain. Every time you reduce someone to a category — “they’re just a [label]” — you reduce yourself too. You shrink your world. Sattvic knowledge expands it back to its actual size: infinite, undivided, wearing seven billion temporary costumes.

A liberated person isn’t someone who has retreated from the diversity of the world. They’re someone who sees the unity within the diversity — and moves through it all with equal respect.

Reflect

Think of someone you’ve mentally categorized and dismissed. What would it feel like to see the same fundamental awareness in them that you recognize in yourself?
