Karma · Lesson 11

Breaking the Chain

कर्मजं बुद्धियुक्ता हि फलं त्यक्त्वा मनीषिणः

The wise, engaged in action with a balanced mind, renouncing the fruits of action, are freed from the bondage of rebirth.

Chapter 2, Verse 51

Every action creates a reaction. Not just in physics — in your mind.

You post on social media → you check for likes → the likes feel good → you post again → you check again. Chain. You overwork → you get promoted → you overwork more → you expect another promotion → you burn out. Chain.

Krishna calls this karma-bandha — the bondage of action. Not because action is bad, but because compulsive action driven by craving results traps you in a loop.

The chain isn’t the action. It’s the attachment. The “I need this to work out” that turns every effort into anxiety.

Breaking the chain doesn’t mean stopping. It means acting from a different place. Not “I need this” but “I’m doing this.” Not “this better work” but “I gave it my best.”

The person who exercises because they love how it feels (not to hit a number). The person who creates because they can’t not create (not for followers). That’s freedom.

Reflect

Where do you feel “chained” — stuck in a cycle of action and craving? What would acting without attachment look like in that area?
