Karma · Lesson 2
Why Act at All?
कुतस्त्वा कश्मलमिदं विषमे समुपस्थितम्
Krishna said: Where has this weakness come from? It is not befitting of you. It does not lead to heaven, nor does it bring honor.
Krishna doesn’t comfort Arjuna. He doesn’t say “there, there.” He says something closer to: “What is this? This isn’t you.”
It sounds harsh, but read it again. Krishna isn’t dismissing Arjuna’s pain. He’s saying: this paralysis is not who you actually are. You’re bigger than this moment of doubt.
We’ve all had someone do this for us. A friend who, instead of validating your spiral, says: “Okay, but are you really going to let this stop you?” Not cruel. Just honest.
The Gita’s first lesson about action is that inaction is also a choice — and usually the worst one. Not acting doesn’t protect you. It just lets fear make the decision for you.
The project you’ve been “thinking about” for months. The conversation you keep rehearsing but never having. The application you haven’t submitted. Inaction feels safe, but it’s just fear wearing a disguise.
Reflect
What’s one thing you’ve been avoiding — where doing nothing feels like the safe choice, but is actually fear in disguise?
