Kala · Lesson 8

The Imperishable Beyond

परस्तस्मात्तु भावोऽन्योऽव्यक्तोऽव्यक्तात्सनातनः। यः स सर्वेषु भूतेषु नश्यत्सु न विनश्यति।।

Beyond this unmanifest, there is yet another unmanifest, eternal existence, which does not perish even when all beings are destroyed.

Chapter 8, Verse 20

Beyond the cycle, there’s something that doesn’t cycle. Behind the breathing universe, something that was never born and never dies.

Krishna has just described the cosmic rhythm — everything manifesting and dissolving, again and again. Now he points beyond it. There’s an “unmanifest beyond the unmanifest” — a reality so fundamental that even the dissolution of the entire cosmos doesn’t touch it.

This is one of the most metaphysically profound verses in the Gita. It’s saying: the deepest reality isn’t the cycle. The cycle happens within something that never changes. The waves rise and fall, but the ocean remains.

In your own experience, you’ve felt this. Moods come and go. Thoughts arise and dissolve. Even your sense of identity shifts across decades. But something in you has been watching the whole show. The awareness that noticed you were five years old is the same awareness noticing you right now. Everything it observed has changed. It hasn’t.

Science pushes toward this same edge. We know matter is energy, energy is fields, fields are… what? At the bottom of physics, there’s a mystery. Something from which everything emerges and into which everything dissolves, but which itself is not a “thing.”

Krishna isn’t being vague. He’s being precise about something that language can’t fully capture. The imperishable isn’t a place you go — it’s what you already are, underneath every identity you’ve ever worn and will ever discard.

The fear of death dissolves not when you believe in an afterlife, but when you recognize something in you that was never born.

Reflect

Can you sense the difference between the “you” that changes — your moods, roles, and beliefs — and the awareness behind it all that has remained constant your entire life?

Quick Check

What does Krishna say exists beyond the unmanifest from which beings emerge?
