Kala · Lesson 2

Thinking of the Eternal

अन्तकाले च मामेव स्मरन्मुक्त्वा कलेवरम्। यः प्रयाति स मद्भावं याति नास्त्यत्र संशयः।।

One who departs from the body thinking of Me alone at the time of death attains My nature. Of this there is no doubt.

Chapter 8, Verse 5

Krishna makes a promise here that sounds almost too simple: think of Me when you die, and you reach Me. No doubt.

But this isn’t a loophole — “live however you want, just whisper the right name at the end.” That misreading misses the entire architecture of the Gita. The point is that your final thought is the harvest of how you’ve lived. You can’t fake it.

Think about what occupies your mind right now. Career stress? A grudge? Your Instagram feed? Now imagine those are the only channels available when your body starts to fail. You won’t suddenly switch to the Divine Channel if you’ve never tuned into it.

This is why every contemplative tradition emphasizes daily practice. Not because God needs your attention, but because you need the training. A musician doesn’t practice scales for the practice room — they practice so their fingers know what to do on stage, under lights, when the pressure hits.

Death is the ultimate performance under pressure. And Krishna is saying: I want you to succeed. So practice now. Make the eternal a daily habit, not a deathbed emergency.

The liberating part? This means death doesn’t have to be terrifying. If your whole life has been a slow turning toward something greater than yourself, then the final moment is just… arriving. Coming home to what you’ve always been walking toward.

Reflect

What would it take for your daily life to feel like practice for your final moment — not morbidly, but as a way of staying connected to what matters most?
