Gunas · Lesson 3
The Fire of Passion
रजो रागात्मकं विद्धि तृष्णासङ्गसमुद्भवम्
Know that rajas is of the nature of passion, giving rise to craving and attachment. It binds the soul through attachment to action.
Rajas is the startup founder energy. The 4 AM alarm clock. The third cup of coffee. The person who answers emails at dinner and calls it “passion.”
Modern culture worships rajas. We celebrate the hustler, the grinder, the person who wants more. More money, more followers, more achievements. Rajas is the engine of civilization — every skyscraper, every empire, every unicorn startup was built on rajasic fire.
But Krishna sees the underside. Rajas produces craving. You hit your goal and immediately move the goalpost. You get the promotion and feel empty by Thursday. You buy the thing you’ve wanted for months and start browsing for the next thing before the package arrives.
That’s the nature of rajasic attachment — not attachment to a thing, but attachment to the pursuit itself. You become addicted to wanting. The hunger feeds on itself.
Watch a rajasic person closely: they’re impressive but rarely at peace. They accomplish enormous things but can’t sit still. They’re always leaning forward, always chasing, always slightly dissatisfied with what they have. Their energy inspires others but exhausts themselves.
Rajas isn’t the villain here. It’s necessary — nothing gets done without it. But unchecked, it becomes a hamster wheel disguised as a ladder.
Reflect
Where in your life is rajasic energy serving you well? Where has it become a craving that masquerades as ambition?
