Daivi · Lesson 7

A World Without Foundation

असत्यमप्रतिष्ठं ते जगदाहुरनीश्वरम्

They say the world is unreal, without foundation, without God — brought about by mutual desire alone, caused by nothing but lust.

Chapter 16, Verse 8

Krishna describes a worldview here, not just a list of bad habits. The demonic person has a philosophy: nothing is real, nothing matters, there is no higher order — just appetite.

This is eerily modern. “It’s all meaningless anyway.” “Everyone’s out for themselves.” “Morality is just social conditioning.” These aren’t fringe positions — they’re mainstream cynicism. And they’re comfortable, in a way, because if nothing matters, then nothing you do is wrong.

But Krishna isn’t just describing atheism. Plenty of people who don’t believe in God live with deep integrity. He’s describing something more specific: the belief that desire is the only real force in the universe. That people are just bundles of wants, and the person who satisfies their wants most efficiently wins.

When you believe the world has no foundation, you stop looking for one. You stop asking “Is this right?” and start asking only “Does this work for me?” Every relationship becomes transactional. Every institution is just a power structure to be gamed.

The divine person, by contrast, acts as if the world means something — even when they can’t prove it. They treat honesty as non-negotiable, not because the universe rewards it, but because it’s the kind of person they choose to be.

Reflect

Do you ever catch yourself thinking “nothing really matters anyway”? What does that thought protect you from — and what does it cost you?

Quick Check

What worldview does Krishna associate with demonic thinking?
