The Demonic Qualities

दम्भो दर्पोऽभिमानश्च क्रोधः पारुष्यमेव च

Hypocrisy, arrogance, excessive pride, anger, harshness, and ignorance — these are the marks of one born with demonic qualities.

Chapter 16, Verse 4

Krishna doesn’t soften the language here. Hypocrisy. Arrogance. Harshness. He calls them demonic — not evil in a fire-and-brimstone way, but corrosive. These are the qualities that rot a person from the inside out.

Hypocrisy leads the list, and that’s deliberate. It’s the foundational crack. Once you’re comfortable saying one thing and doing another, everything else follows. The public figure preaching kindness who terrorises their staff. The guru who teaches detachment while hoarding power. The gap between the mask and the face is where the damage lives.

Arrogance is different from confidence. Confidence says “I can do this.” Arrogance says “I’m better than you.” One builds capacity; the other builds walls.

Harshness is easy to mistake for strength. The boss who screams thinks they’re being decisive. The internet commenter who tears someone apart thinks they’re being sharp. But harshness almost always comes from a place of insecurity — it’s a loud way of saying “I need to feel powerful.”

What makes this verse uncomfortable is that these aren’t traits you find only in villains. They show up in ordinary people on ordinary days. A harsh reply to a loved one. A moment of arrogance in a meeting. Hypocrisy when nobody’s watching.

Reflect

Which of these qualities do you notice showing up in your own behaviour, even in small ways? Not to judge yourself — but to see clearly.

Quick Check

Which of these does the Gita list as a 'demonic' quality?
