Bhakti · Lesson 10
Equal to All
समोऽहं सर्वभूतेषु न मे द्वेष्योऽस्ति न प्रियः
I am equal to all beings. None is hateful to Me, none is dear. But those who worship Me with devotion — they are in Me, and I am in them.
This is the verse that holds the entire Bhakti teaching together — and it contains a beautiful paradox.
Krishna says: I play no favourites. No one is hateful, no one is dear. The rain falls on every roof. The sun shines on every face. There’s no VIP section in the universe.
And then the turn: but those who worship with devotion are in Me, and I am in them.
How can both be true? Because devotion isn’t about earning special treatment. It’s about tuning in.
The radio signal is broadcasting everywhere, equally. But only the receiver that’s tuned to the right frequency hears the music. The signal doesn’t love that radio more. The radio simply chose to listen.
This maps to every kind of devotion. The mentor is available to every student. But the one who shows up every day, who asks the hard questions, who does the work — that student and the mentor become inseparable. Not because the mentor plays favourites, but because proximity creates intimacy.
Love works this way too. It’s available to everyone. But the people who practice it — who choose patience over reaction, presence over distraction, generosity over keeping score — they experience more of it. Not because they’re rewarded, but because devotion is the reward.
This is the final teaching of Bhakti: devotion isn’t a transaction. It’s a transformation. You don’t devote yourself to get something. You devote yourself and discover you already had it.
Reflect
Think about a relationship or pursuit where your devotion transformed you more than it changed anything external. What did that teach you about what devotion actually is?
