Bhakti · Lesson 1

The Question of Devotion

एवं सततयुक्ता ये भक्तास्त्वां पर्युपासते

Arjuna asks: Between those who worship You with constant devotion, and those who worship the imperishable unmanifest — who is better versed in yoga?

Chapter 12, Verse 1

Arjuna’s question here is one we all ask in different ways: what’s the best way to care about something?

Some people love through grand gestures — the public declaration, the vision board, the five-year plan pinned to the wall. Others love through quiet presence — showing up, doing the work, without needing to name what they’re devoted to.

Think about the people in your life who are truly devoted to their craft. Some of them can articulate exactly why they do what they do — they’ve read the philosophy, studied the greats, built a framework. Others just… do it. They wake up, they practice, they improve. They couldn’t write a manifesto about it, but their hands know the way.

Krishna is about to answer this question, and his answer is surprisingly practical. But the question itself matters. Arjuna isn’t asking out of intellectual curiosity. He’s asking because he wants to know: what kind of devotion is actually available to me?

That’s the real question. Not what’s theoretically best, but what’s honestly possible given who you are right now.

Reflect

When you think about what you’re devoted to — your work, a relationship, a skill — do you tend toward the abstract vision or the daily practice? Which one actually sustains you?
