Atman · Lesson 9

The Self in All Beings

अहमात्मा गुडाकेश सर्वभूताशयस्थितः। अहमादिश्च मध्यं च भूतानामन्त एव च।।

I am the Self, O Arjuna, seated in the hearts of all creatures. I am the beginning, the middle, and the end of all beings.

Chapter 10, Verse 20

You’re stuck in traffic, annoyed at the driver who cut you off. You’re in a meeting, frustrated by the coworker who won’t stop talking. You’re scrolling online, judging someone you’ve never met. It’s easy to see other people as obstacles, irritants, or strangers.

Krishna flips this entirely. The same self that sits in you, sits in them. Not a similar self. The same self. The consciousness looking out through your eyes is the same consciousness looking out through theirs.

This is not a feel-good platitude. It’s a radical claim with radical consequences. If the same self is in the person you love and the person you can’t stand, then your relationship with others is actually a relationship with yourself. Every act of cruelty toward another is, in some deep sense, self-harm. Every act of kindness is self-care on a scale we rarely consider.

This explains why genuine connection feels so good. When you truly see another person — not their role, not their status, not their surface — something clicks. You recognize yourself in them. That’s not imagination. That’s, according to Krishna, reality.

It also explains compassion. You don’t have to force yourself to care about strangers. You just have to see clearly enough to recognize that the line between “self” and “other” is thinner than you think. The person struggling on the bus. The friend hiding their pain. The stranger who smiled at you for no reason. Same light, different lamps.

Reflect

Think of someone you find difficult to empathize with. Can you imagine the same awareness behind their eyes that sits behind yours? How does that shift your feeling toward them?

Quick Check

What does it mean that the Self is 'seated in the hearts of all creatures'?
