Atman · Lesson 1
You Are Not Your Resume
न जायते म्रियते वा कदाचिन्नायं भूत्वा भविता वा न भूयः। अजो नित्यः शाश्वतोऽयं पुराणो न हन्यते हन्यमाने शरीरे।।
The soul is never born nor does it ever die; nor having once existed, does it cease to be. It is unborn, eternal, ever-existing, and primeval. It is not slain when the body is slain.
You lost the job. The relationship ended. The title you worked so hard for got taken away overnight. And now the question hits: who am I without that?
If you’ve ever felt like the ground disappeared under your feet because something external changed, you’ve experienced the core confusion Krishna is addressing here. We build our identities on things that can be taken away — job titles, relationships, bank balances, followers — and then wonder why we feel so fragile.
Krishna’s claim is radical: the real you was never born and will never die. Not in a mystical, hand-wavy sense, but in a deeply practical one. The part of you that observes your thoughts, that watches your moods shift, that remains even when everything around you changes — that part isn’t touched by any of it.
Think about it. You’ve been a child, a teenager, a student, maybe a professional. Each version felt like “you” at the time, but each one passed. What stayed? Something stayed. The awareness behind all those roles didn’t go anywhere.
This isn’t about ignoring your career or your relationships. It’s about not being them. When you know that your core self is untouchable, you can engage with life more fully — because you’re not terrified of losing yourself every time things shift.
Reflect
If you stripped away your job title, your relationships, and your accomplishments, what would remain? What is the “you” that has been constant through every phase of your life?
